Why should I study this subject?
A subject that can equal up to four GCSE’s and is a nationally recognised vocational qualification, designed to provide students with a choice of routes into further education or employment. It is initially made up of three Units of work based around Exploring Business Purposes, Developing Customer Relations and Investigating Financial Control. More Units can be studied during Year 11 depending on the student’s own individual progress.
The qualification will appeal if you:
· Enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to your life and experiences.
· Have a keen interest in business and how it operates.
· Want to find out more about business through personal investigation.
· Want to study a course that is active, enjoyable and ‘profitable’.
· Want to move to a related career or further education.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
Students who undertake this course will:
· Gain an understanding of business.
· Investigate the part people play in business.
· Have the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way.
· Follow a programme of study that enables progression to further courses and employment in business.
· Develop ’Key Skills’ which are highly valued by employers and further education.
· Gain confidence by developing independent learning skills.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
The course will be taught in three equal parts during Year 10, covering each specific unit in detail. Students will have the opportunity to be proactive in their learning and will be expected to develop independent learning skills with guidance from the teacher. All units of work will be taught with the expectation that students will develop their own individual coursework portfolios through the investigation of real life and fictitious business organisations.
Note:
As this is a work related qualification; students may be required to attend work placements at business organisations in order to develop their understanding to complete assignment work.

How will the work be marked and assessed?
The BTEC First Certificate/Diploma can be awarded up to four, equivalent, GCSE grades. The grades will be a summary of results for each of the units of work reported as Distinction, Merit and Pass.
Assessments:
Assessment will be through 100% coursework completion. This coursework will be completed during timetabled lessons at school or can be completed outside school through using Raincliffe School’s Virtual Learning Environment.
