Subject Title: D & T Graphic Products
Lead Teacher: Mr D Cotton
Examining Body: AQA
Levels: Single Tier
Why should I study this subject?
D & T Graphic Products gives students:
· Experience in designing and making visual and practical solutions to design problems, by using a variety of graphical and modelling techniques.
· It allows students to develop an awareness of the wide variety of variety of product modelling materials and graphical techniques used in modern product design and manufacture.
· It is an enjoyable practical subject which allows students to develop their skills and knowledge of visual, graphical and 3D modelling, using a variety of materials including ICT.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
Design & Technology is fundamentally about ‘decision making’. It requires students to gather information and research on problems and situations before making considered judgements on what to do to solve those problems.

Design & Technology teaches important life skills. It allows students to experience modern design developments and production methods which are common to the commercial world.

Many career paths will benefit from a Design & Technology Qualification – Construction, Engineering, Design, Food Industry, Architecture and Electronics are just some of these career paths.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
Year 10 is intended to give students the necessary skills and knowledge to complete the GCSE Controlled Assessment Task.

This will happen via a series of mini design projects and focussed practical tasks.

Students will use a variety of materials throughout the course and also practise a variety of skills they need to acquire for the production of the GCSE Controlled Assessment Task.

How will the work be marked and assessed?
Controlled Assessment – 60%: 20 pages A3 or 40 pages A4 Design Folder plus practical work.
Examination – 40%: 2 hour examination.

· The Controlled Assessment Task is individually chosen and is produced usually in the final year of the course.
· Controlled Assessments will be regular and feedback given.
· It is essential that students are well organised and consistent with their efforts.
· Controlled Assessments need to be complete by early March of the year of the exam.
· Work from that time will be preparation for the examination
