Why should I study this subject?...............Because it’s good fun and you will enjoy it!
As well as helping students acquire subject knowledge, it will:
· allow less exam-orientated students the opportunity to succeed
· address business and sustainability issues in the world of travel, tourism and leisure
· be relevant and of interest to many young people
· engage students in a growing industry in the UK that has many employment opportunities.
Over the last five years Raincliffe School GCSE Leisure and Tourism students have consistently produced some of the best results in the country. During this time the A*-C pass rate has been two and even three times the national average. In the summer of 2008 the A*-C pass rate for Leisure and Tourism students at Raincliffe was 100%. More than half the students achieved A* and A grades.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
In the UK, over 1.5 million people are employed in leisure and tourism; it is the fastest-growing industry in the world.
The course will give students a broad understanding of leisure and tourism, including the important vocational areas of customer service and marketing, as well as providing an insight into both the sport and recreation and travel and tourism industries in the UK.
The course is designed to help students progress into the advanced level of study such as BTEC Travel & Tourism, BTEC Hospitality, AVCE Travel & Tourism or AVCE Leisure & Recreation.
GCSE Leisure & Tourism also prepares students for the Advanced Diploma in Travel & Tourism, equivalent to 3.5 A Levels. An Advanced Diploma can lead on to university or into a career.

How will the work be marked and assessed?
External Assessment (Unit 1)
The exam is one hour and will be a mix of multiple-choice and longer extended-writing questions.
External Assessment (Unit 2)
The exam is one hour and will be a mix of multiple-choice and longer extended-writing questions.
Controlled assessments (Units 2* and 4*)
At first you will research and gather information with guidance from your teacher. You will go on visits, have talks from visiting speakers and collect information over a set amount of time. Once you have gathered all your information you will be ready to start working on the tasks set for each unit. Tasks include producing a booklet, a guide, promotional material, a report or a presentation. These tasks are carried out under controlled assessment conditions. You will have 15 hours to complete the tasks using your research and prepared work. Your teacher will advise you when and where this will take place. No more long, drawn-out coursework sessions! However, you must be prepared to put in the effort to prepare your work properly before the controlled assessment time.
