Why should I study this subject?
Thestudy of GCSE Geography can help students to:
  • develop a knowledge and understanding of current events from the local area to the global perspective
  • investigate the earth and its peoples
  • study the features of the earth such as mountains, rivers and seas
  • develop a range of skills such as map reading, data collection, ICT and problem solving
  • gain an understanding and appreciation of the cultures and backgrounds of people from all over the world.
 
What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
  • Students may visit some of the countries studied. It may help to know something about the country and its people when visiting.
  • Geography can lead to careers in accountancy, market research, management consultancy. Aid work, landscape architecture, countryside management, field studies work, environmental consultancy, civil engineering, social work, cartography, surveying, town planning, heritage management and many more areas.
  • Geography is classed as a science subject so it can help if going on to study science based subjects on leaving school.
 
How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
  • Homework will be set regularly.
  • Fieldwork opportunities will help improve students’ skills.
  • There will be revision sessions/conferences and workshops.
  • Lessons will be taught in a range of learning styles and will aim to incorporate ICT as much as possible.
 
How will the work be marked and assessed?
  • There will be a range of practice questions throughout the two years,
  • The course is modular so tests happen after the topic has been taught,
  • There will be three, one hour exams on topics such as geographical skills, climate change, sustainable development, different types of landscapes, environmental issues, settlements and tourism. Each exam last for an hour and is worth 25% of the total grade.
  • The last piece of assessment is the controlled assessment, worth 25% of the total grade. The exam board will choose the topic and this will change every year. The overarching theme for this test is ‘Investigating Geography’.
