Subject Title: Modern World History
Lead Teacher: Mr C Moore
Examining Body: OCR
Level: GCSE (NQF 1 & 2)
Why should I study this subject?
  • OCR’s Modern World History is the most popular History GCSE course in the country.
  • You will learn about key events in 20th Century History that shaped the world we live in.
  • You will understand how it would have felt to live through world war, the rise of the Nazi party and the fight for women’s right to vote.
  • You will find out how mere humans struggled for but failed to achieve world peace.
  • You will discover how civilised countries became controlled by ruthless dictators who caused the deaths of millions of people.
  • You will develop skills learned at Key Stage 3 that allow you to:
    • interpret and evaluate information
    • communicate and apply your knowledge
    • describe and analyse the key features of the period
    • criticise and solve problems.
  • Here’s a great reason to study History!
History is really interesting. Think about it – how many programmes on TV are based upon History? Loads is the answer, right from Time Team up to The History Channel – a whole TV channel dedicated to History. People are fascinated by History and its ability to help us find out about who we really are.
What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
In a recent survey of the top 100 companies listed by the CBI, more company chairmen had a degree in History than in any other subject. Why have these people succeeded? One reason is their excellent communication skills – their ability to analyse information accurately, make decisions based upon that information and then communicate their decisions effectively to other people. These are some of the key skills that History can teach you.
As well as company directorships, History is vital if you intend to study Law or Journalism, due to the research and interpretation skills it develops. It can lead to higher education studies in History, Archaeology, Art History, work in museums or art galleries. It is incredibly useful in management and administration positions as it enables you to communicate information effectively.
How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
GCSE History continues to build upon the skills learned at Key Stage 3. You will conduct most of the research yourself using a variety of media, led and assisted by your teacher. If you are prepared to work hard and listen carefully to your teacher, it is relatively easy to attain a good mark. There are only two elements required to attain a good grade at GCSE History, a good general knowledge of the subject and the ability to understand what the examiner is expecting of you when you answer the question. Your teacher can provide you with both of these.
How will the work be marked and assessed?
To attain GCSE qualification, students need to take two exam papers and complete two pieces of coursework. The exams are taken at the end of the second year and account for 75% of marks awarded. Two pieces of controlled assessment will be produced during the first term of Year 11. Together they account for the remaining 25% of marks.
