Why should I study this subject?

Mathematics is a core subject that most employers and colleges of further education request students to have at a level A-C.

Many other subjects of study, not related to mathematics, still ask that applicants to their courses possess a good pass at GCSE level.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?

Mathematics is a universal subject which applies to most life skills that everyone uses daily, in whatever walk of life they choose to follow.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?

The mathematics course consists of a Functional Test which has a 40 minute competency test and a 75 minute test using pre-released data. An award at Level 1 or 2 is achieved.

The GCSE paper has a Unit 2 Test, with two papers of 30 minutes taken at the end of Year 10 and a Unit 3 Test, with two papers of one hour duration. Foundation Level allows you to achieve grades C to G; Higher Level will allow you to achieve grades A* to D.

An Additional Mathematics GCSE is available which consists of one, two hour paper. Foundation Level allows you to achieve grades C to G; Higher Level will allow you to achieve grades A* to D.

All students will take both Functional Maths and GCSE Maths; some students will also follow Additional GCSE Maths.

How will the work be marked and assessed?

Your class work and homework will be regularly marked and assessed for improvement or need for further revision.

Practice examination papers will be used as applicable to a unit of teaching. Past examination papers will be used to revise for modular and terminal examinations that take place at the end of units of teaching, to assess progress between modular examinations.
