Why should I study this subject?
If you are interested in sport and are keen to develop the theory and performance analysis behind sport. If you are willing to work hard at both practical and theory aspects then this course will provide you with a depth of knowledge and practical ability to progress into further sporting education. If you wish to further develop your own performance then this course will give you the opportunity to understand how to train smarter, perform better and develop your confidence in helping others to improve.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
As well as being the ideal preparation for the A Level Physical Education course, GCSE PE allows for progression to related vocational qualifications such as BTEC Firsts and Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences. Both Yorkshire Coast College and Scarborough 6th Form College offer a wide range of courses which will allow you to progress your knowledge and practical abilities to the next level.
The course develops the transferable skills that employers are looking for and can lead to a wide variety of employment opportunities. This can include further training in such areas as recreational management, leisure activities, coaching, officiating, the fitness industry, the armed forces and the civil service.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
This is a challenging course which requires you to be physically talented, to be passionate about sport and physical activity and committed to learning the theory aspects in order to develop an understanding of how the body operates and the ways in which you can improve your own and others’ performances.
You will be expected to perform advanced skills consistently well across a range of activities. You will also be expected to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of how the body reacts to exercise and training, through completion of a Personal Exercise Plan and in answering questions on a written exam paper.
Teaching is done through both theory and practical lessons. Students should be prepared to take part in the classroom based theory elements on a weekly basis. Theory where possible will be taught or revised using a practical approach.
Students complete the Short Course in Year 10, extending this to the Full Course in Year 11.

How will the work be marked and assessed?
The GCSE Course is assessed over two units.
Unit 1 is externally assessed through a written examination paper. This will contribute a maximum of 40% towards your total marks.
Unit 2 is assessed in two sections:
Section 1 – four practical performances in the role of either player/participant, leader or official. You can achieve 48% of the marks from your four performances from at least two different areas of activity, two of which may be in the role of a leader or official. (Short Course – students will only be assessed in two performances from two activity areas.)
Section 2 – analysis of performance in one of the chosen activities. This will be worth 12% of the marks and should include planning, performing and evaluating a Personal Exercise Programme.
