Subject Title: Wider Key Skills
Lead Teacher: Mr G Lewis
Examining Body: ASDAN
Level: GCSE A-C (equivalent)
Why should I study this subject?

This course will be by invitation only. It aims to introduce a wide range of job related areas and will suit those students who are keen to develop skills in communication, problem solving, working with others and improving their own learning.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?

ASDAN Wider Key Skills enables young people to understand themselves and others better and to become more prepared for making the transition into adult life. It helps to develop flexible ways of working and to develop personal qualities which can be applied in their working lives.

All ASDAN key skills qualifications are accepted at college and will earn 2¼ GCSE passes.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?

This course is taught in project modules. Each module will give experience of a vocational course which students may wish to pursue further at college. Where possible, links with Yorkshire Coast College will be made, as well as trips and visits to help use specialist facilities and equipment, eg hair salons, building workshops, catering kitchens etc.

The course will draw on its experiences from some of the following areas:
  • Construction
  • Catering
  • Electronics
  • Working with children
  • The uniformed services
  • Working with animals
  • Hair and beauty
  • The music industry.

Students will be able to cover a number of these areas during the two year course. Skills in these areas are not needed but students must be willing to try things out, work away from school and enjoy shaping their own learning.

How will the work be marked and assessed?

All work will be assessed via completion of a log book and portfolio of evidence. Staff will guide students through this process.
