GCSE DANCE – The subject at a glance

GCSE dance focuses on the aesthetic and artistic qualities of dance and the use of dance movement as a medium of expression and communication in the performance, creation and appreciation of dance.

Will I enjoy this course?

You will enjoy this course if you want to study a subject that
• involves performing
• involves watching different types of dance
• involves learning about different styles of dance
• gives you the opportunity to perform solo as well as within a group
• gives you the opportunity to learn more about choreography.

How does it follow on from what I have learned before?

You will improve your skills in the performing of different styles of dance. You will improve your skills in choreography. You will watch a variety of different dances and learn more about how and why it was choreographed and/or performed.

What about exams?

There is one written exam in the summer. You will answer questions on the 3 areas, general knowledge of dance, Set work (specific dance and choreographer) and focus study area.

Is there any coursework?

Yes. You will perform a set study which is a dance choreographed for the exam board. This is usually performed solo and is assessed internally. You will also perform as part of a group. This is usually choreographed by the teacher or a visiting choreographer and is assessed internally. You will also choreograph and perform your own solo or duet/group. This is also assessed internally.

What other skills might I develop?

As well as covering Dance at GCSE level, the course will enable you to develop Key Skills in confidence group work, and communication which could be useful to you in whatever you do afterwards. In particular, GCSE Dance offers opportunities to develop the wider Key skills in working with others (e.g. taking part in rehearsals, performing).

What could I do next with GCSE Dance?

GCSE Dance is a good preparation for further Dance study and a solid foundation for the AS/A Levels in Dance and the new Vocational A-Level in Performing Arts. You may wish to take a GCSE in Dance for its own sake, perhaps to form the basis of a future interest. Alternatively, you may wish to go into a job where it is useful to have had experience of Dance or where you will need to use some of the skills developed during this course. These might include careers in the performing arts industry, entertainment and teaching or any job which involves communication and expressive skills.
