Mathematics

About the subject

Mathematics transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Students at Raincliffe are taught mathematics for six sessions per week which totals three hours of learning.

Students are entered for a variety of competitions including the United Kingdom Mathematics Challenge, the Business and Enterprise Stock Market Challenge and the Jaguar Cars Maths Challenge.

Key Stage 3

In years 7,8 and 9 the schemes of work are based around the National Strategy and follow the format of starter, main teaching phase and plenary. Much of the learning is based around a range of software packages designed to promote active learning and student’s enjoyment of the subject.

Targets are set at the start of each year and students are tested twice a year to monitor progress and inform teaching.
Critical thinking skills are taught through mathematics and offer students the opportunity to work on a range of products from Power Points to Movie making.

Homework tasks are set to develop independent learning skills.

Key Stage 4 - GCSE

In years 10 and 11 students study the AQA GCSE functional mathematics course. This leads to either a level 1 or level 2 qualification in functional mathematics. In addition students side one modular examination at the end of year 10 and a second modular examination at the end of year 11 which leads to a GCSE at either foundation level – grades C to G or higher level – grades A* to D.
For some students there will be the opportunity to sit additional GCSE at either foundation or higher level.

The department has a subscription to mymaths which is website containing extensive learning and revision materials including on line homework and can be accessed by students at home.
Mathswatch CDs are available for purchase to support student learning.
