English Department
The Department
Staffing:
The English Department currently consists of a Subject leader and three other teachers.
Learning:
Year 10 and Year 11 students follow the OCR English and English Literature Course.
All students in KS3 follow the KS3 National Curriculum. There are SOWs backed up by a curriculum overview. Each unit of work includes research and ICT activity that broadens and extends their understanding of each unit. Time is dedicated in each unit of study to a review of targets, criteria and self review to build on key skills.
The English department is committed to the use of success criteria, to drive learning to develop independent, expert learners. ICT is used to strengthen and enrich the delivery of English and for pupils to extend their revision. For instance, Birchfield English Programme is available for pupils to revise Shakespeare or improve their writing.

Enrichment:
The English Department runs evenings that celebrates Speaking and listening called Raincliffe Speaks. We also attend Youth Speaks. My Mother Said I Never Should and Romeo & Juliet are two performances recently celebrated by Year 11. BBC Radio York broadcast plays written by Raincliffe pupils in Year 11.
Facilities:
The English Department is located across school in four class rooms at the moment, however, there are plans to move to the third floor situated next to Mathematics. This relocation will be in two parts, the first involving the move, the second part involving refitting and decoration, including a purpose built storeroom to house the department’s significant resources. Each class room will be fitted with Overhead Projectors.
Future Development:
This is an exciting time to join a developing team. You will complete a team of three English specialists, supported by teachers from across the curriculum. The school’s Business & Enterprise College Status provides an additional opportunity to develop aspects of work related learning within the English Curriculum.
