Subject Title: Applied Business 2306

Lead Teacher: Mr G Lewis

Examining Body: Edexcel

Level: GCSE (Double Award)

Why should I study this subject?
A Double GCSE in Applied Business is a nationally recognised, work related qualification designed to provide you with a choice of routes into further education or employment.
It is made up of three units:
Unit 1: Investigating Business. Unit 2: People and Business. Unit 3: Business Finance.

This course will appeal to you if you:

  • enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to your life and experiences
  • have a keen interest in business and how it operates
  • want to find out more about business through personal investigation
  • want to study a course that is active, enjoyable and ‘profitable’
  • want to move to a related career or further education.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
Students who undertake this course will:

  • gain an understanding of business
  • investigate the part people play in business
  • have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way
  • follow a programme of study that enables progression to further courses and employment in business
  • develop ‘Key Skills’ which are highly valued by employers and further education
  • gain confidence by developing independent learning skills.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
The course will be taught in three equal parts, covering each unit in detail. Students will need to be proactive in their learning and will be expected to use their own initiative with guidance from the teacher.
Unit 3 (Business Finance) will be taught through teacher led lessons.
Unit 1 (Investigating Business) and Unit 2 (People and Business) will be taught with the expectation that students will work on their coursework portfolios for the majority of the lessons, with guidance given from the teacher, while investigating real life organisations.

Note:
As this is a work related qualification, students will be expected to attend three business work placements at a medium to large organisation. This will take place throughout the two year course.

How will the work be marked and assessed?
The GCSE in Applied Business is a double award so is awarded two grades. The grades will be the summary of results for each of the three scores for each unit of work. These will be reported as A*A* to GG.

Assessments:
During the course a number of assessments will be carried out based on Units 1 and 2 and a written examination will be taken, based on Unit 3. This equates to:

  • Coursework (Unit 1 and 2) = 66% of final grade.
  • Written exam (Unit 3) = 33% of final grade.
