Subject Title: First Certificate in BTEC Media

Why should I study this subject?
The course would suit students interested in pursuing a career in photography, film, animation, newspaper journalism, music promotion, retail promotion, events organisation, advertising or students who intend to develop their own skills in areas of photography, video or music production as a hobby or leisure interest.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?

  • BTEC First Certificates offer direct progression on to BTEC National programmes. On completion of a BTEC National, students can progress to a BTEC Higher National or BTEC Foundation Degree programme.
  • A BTEC First also prepares students for employment in their chosen career.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
The course will be taught over two years. It is worth two GCSE’s and will consist of the following units:

  • Research for Media Production – will develop initial skills in research techniques, concentrating on research methods and techniques, how to identify sources of information and how to use them to gather relevant material.
  • Video Production – introduces learners to the techniques and technology of video-based production work.
  • Audio Production – in this unit learners will explore basic sound recording techniques and technology.
  • Interactive Media Production – will enable learners to explore techniques associated with the production of an interactive media product.
  • Photography Techniques – this unit will enable learners to explore and develop their understanding of the techniques, equipment and materials used in the production of photographs.
  • Animation Techniques – aims to introduce learners to the practical processes of animation and enables them to develop an understanding of historical and contemporary animation techniques.
  • Media Production Project – learners are given the opportunity, either individually or in a small group, to develop some understanding of what it is like to set up and see through a production project of their own.

How will the work be marked and assessed?

  • All modules consist of coursework assessment.
