Subject Title: Geography | Lead Teacher: Mr R Davenport | Examining Body: AQA | Level: GCSE | Why should I study this subject? The study of GCSE Geography can help you to: - develop a knowledge and understanding of current events from the local area to the global
- investigate the earth and its peoples
- study the features of the earth – such as mountains, rivers and seas – and how they were formed
- develop a range of useful skills such as map reading, data collection, ICT and problem solving
- gain an understanding and appreciation of the cultures and backgrounds of people from all over the world.
| What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school? You will probably visit lots more countries than your parents and travel to areas of the world only normally seen on TV. Geography could lead you to exciting career prospects – remember, geography achieves good examination results nationally and is one of the most versatile subjects. Geography is classified as a science subject in many universities when studied at A Level. Further studies in Geography can lead to careers in accountancy, market research, management consultancy, aid work, landscape architecture, countryside management, field studies work, environmental consultancy, civil engineering, social work, cartography, surveying, town planning, heritage management and many more areas. | How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me? Three 50 minute lessons per week in Years 10 and 11. Weekly homework. Fieldwork opportunities to improve key skills and gather data for coursework. Revision conferences and workshops. All students will be expected to be organised and methodical in their approach to the course. All students will be expected to work independently on key areas of the course. | How will the work be marked and assessed? Paper 1 – 30% of total marks - 1¼ hours. All questions are compulsory. Short answer questions and two structured questions on the UK. A UK Ordnance Survey map will be provided and may be used in one or more questions. Paper 2 – 45% of total marks – 2 hours. Short answer questions and a structured question on each of the following: The European Union – The Wider World – Global Issues. Coursework – 25% of total marks. Coursework of approximately 2500 words based on a fieldwork investigation on a local/small scale. |
