Subject Title: Leisure and Tourism

Lead Teacher: Mr G Henshaw

Examining Body: Edexcel

Level: GCSE (Double Award)

Why should I study this subject?
Since the course was introduced six years ago the pass rate in this subject has been well above the national average. In 2007 the pass rate was 100%, with 80% of students achieving a grade A*-C.

  • All Leisure and Tourism students will take part in a two week work placement where they will be able to apply the lessons learned in the classroom to the real world of work.
  • Students will work with staff at the world’s only submarium at The Deep in Hull.
  • Students will work with staff at the Sea Life Centre in Scarborough.
  • The subject will be delivered in Raincliffe School’s Business and Enterprise block.
  • Students will spend much of their Leisure and Tourism time working in the ICT suite based in the Business and Enterprise block.

What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school?
This qualification is worth two GCSEs and you can achieve pass grades up to and including A*A*. The subject is academically demanding.

  • Leisure and Tourism is one of the largest employers in this town and is a huge, global industry that is constantly expanding. This qualification may secure training and ultimately employment in the industry.
  • You can follow Advanced Level Leisure and Tourism qualifications at Scarborough Sixth Form College and Yorkshire Coast College.

In general the qualification will:

  • Provide students with an understanding of Leisure and Tourism and the part it plays in society.
  • Give students the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way.
  • Develop Key Skills, which are highly valued by employers and further education.
  • Give confidence by developing independent learning skills.

The subject will appeal to:

  • Students who prefer coursework to examinations.
  • Students who enjoy ICT.
  • Students who are prepared to work independently at school and at home.

How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me?
Throughout the first two terms of the course students will learn about the many different components of the Leisure and Tourism industry. There will be an emphasis on how to successfully answer examination questions and students will have the opportunity to practise their techniques on past examination papers. Students will initially sit the examination set by Edexcel in June of Year 10 and they will be allowed to resit the examination in January of Year 11; the higher of the two marks will be the one that counts.
During the remaining four terms of the course students will work on assignments set by the teacher. These assignments will build into a Customer Service Portfolio and a Marketing Portfolio. Much of the work will be completed on computers and will focus on the experiences gained during a two week work placement and the work with the staff at the Deep Submarium in Hull and the Sea Life Centre in Scarborough.

How will the work be marked and assessed?

  • The GCSE Leisure and Tourism course requires you to work at the same level as any other GCSE course.
  • The qualification you receive at the end of the course will be graded on an A*-G scale. However, Leisure and Tourism is worth two GCSEs.
  • To gain a pass grade students must sit a test set by Edexcel and complete assignments set by the teacher. These assignments are on Marketing and Customer Service.
  • The test is worth 1/3 of the final mark and can be retaken if students are not happy with their mark.
  • The assignments set by the teacher account for the remaining two thirds of the final mark.
