Subject Title: DT Resistant Materials | Lead Teacher: Mr R W Chisholm | Examining Body: AQA | Level: GCSE | Why should I study this subject? We increasingly live in a world surrounded by products which have been produced to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. This subject provides you with the opportunity to develop your understanding of resistant materials and how they are used to create modern products. You will have the opportunity to use machinery, tools, equipment, ICT and CAD/CAM to design and make a series of solutions to design problems. | What use will a qualification in this subject be to me when I leave school? Use of hand tools, machinery, ICT and problem solving skills, along with production of high quality products, provides students with the skills necessary to move to post 16 courses and in to the world of work. | How will this subject be taught and what will be expected from me? Skills and knowledge are learned and developed through a series of mini projects during Year 10. These seek to build on the work done in Key Stage 3. Use of ICT is an essential part of this course as students must become proficient with the specialised software used in the design and production of their graphic products. The ability to work with precision is crucial. At the end of the year students commence their final coursework, which has to be completed by mid March in Year 11. | How will the work be marked and assessed? All assessments are against the GCSE assessment criteria. The coursework, your final project in Year 11, is worth 60% of the final mark. The examination, at either Foundation or Higher Tier, is worth the final 40%. The coursework consists of a 20 page (approx) A3 design folder (20%) and associated made products or promotional materials (40%) |
