The Sport Education Model is adopted for the majority of Key Stage 4 PE, whereby students are encouraged to take on greater responsibility for the organisation and coordination of the activity: working in small teams to set out and clear away equipment, run skills practices, organise fitness training sessions and coordinate mini-festivals or tournaments for students in their own age group but also for lower school students.
For those students who wish to pursue a future career in the Fitness Industry, we offer a nationally recognised qualification that offers an insight into the enjoyment you can gain through sports leadership. You are shown generic skills, which can then be applied to a variety of different sporting activities.
It’s a practical qualification where you learn through doing, rather than through written work (although you do have to complete a log book and do some written preparation & evaluation of the sessions you deliver). Your ability as a competent leader is assessed mainly by observation of you leading small groups of younger students rather than written tests.
There are 7 core units that need completing:
Unit 01 - Planning, preparing and assisting a simple sporting activity
Unit 02 - Basic communication skills for leading a sporting activity
Unit 03 - Principles / practice in delivering a basic health / fitness session
Unit 04 - Understanding fair play in sport
Unit 05 - Understanding the role of the sports official
Unit 06 - Understanding the scope of local sport and recreation activities
Unit 07 - Demonstration of leadership skills in sport
Once trained, you will help support the work of the PE Department in helping with Out of Hours Clubs and Inter-House fixtures, leading some of your peers in small-sided games activities and working in our feeder Primary Schools to deliver coaching sessions or support Primary staff when they hold their school Sports Days.
